How to Install an AIO Liquid Cooler

AIO installation looks intimidating but is straightforward once you understand the orientation rules and mounting sequence. Here is the complete process with the pitfalls that cause the most avoidable failures.

Orientation Rules First

The one non-negotiable rule of AIO installation: the pump must never be the highest point in the loop. Air collects at the highest point, and a pump running dry from air ingestion will fail within minutes. This determines your radiator orientation before any other decision.

Top-mount, tubes-down is the standard orientation. The radiator sits above the case with tubes exiting the bottom of the radiator down toward the CPU block. Air collects at the top of the radiator (correct), the pump is at the bottom (correct). This orientation is safe for the pump and thermally efficient because heat naturally rises.

Front-mount is the alternative. The radiator sits at the front intake of the case, with the pump-CPU block mounted at the top of the loop but below the top of the radiator. This is still safe — the pump is not the highest point. Front-mount gives the CPU cooler ambient air but means the GPU breathes air warmed by the radiator.

Never mount the radiator below the pump. This is the failure mode that kills AIOs. If your case does not support top-mount or front-mount with the pump below the radiator top, choose a different case or a different AIO — do not compromise on this.

Preparation and Layout

Before mounting anything, dry-fit the AIO in the case to identify clearance issues. Common problems: radiator conflicts with top-mounted RAM heatspreaders, radiator+fan thickness exceeds top-panel clearance in cases with GPU support brackets, tubes are too short to reach from a front-mount radiator to the CPU without stretching. Better to catch these before applying paste.

Apply thermal paste to the CPU IHS following the pea-in-the-middle method described in the thermal paste guide. Modern AIO cold plates spread paste well; do not over-apply.

Mount the radiator fans in the correct direction before installing the radiator. Fans have an arrow on the frame indicating airflow direction. For top-mount exhaust, fans should push air out of the case (arrow pointing up if the radiator is at the top). For front-mount intake, fans push air into the case (arrow pointing back toward the interior). Getting this wrong wastes an hour of unmounting later.

Mounting Sequence

Install the radiator into the case first — screw the radiator to the case's top or front mount points. The screws for radiator-to-case mounting are usually shorter than the screws for fan-to-radiator; check the AIO's manual for which length goes where. Long screws punched into a radiator will puncture the coolant channels and destroy the AIO.

Mount the CPU block last, using the AIO's included mounting hardware for your socket type. Cross-tighten the mounting screws — a few turns on one, then the diagonally opposite, and so on until all four are hand-tight. Then torque each screw with slight additional pressure. Modern AIO mounts have hard stops that prevent over-tightening on most sockets.

Route the tubes away from case fans, GPU, and cable pathways. Coolant tubes are flexible but not infinitely so — a sharp bend can restrict flow and stress the tube. Aim for gradual sweeping bends. If tubes are too long for your route, coil the excess loosely rather than kinking it.

Connections and Cable Management

The pump has a 3-pin or 4-pin PWM cable — connect this to the motherboard's dedicated pump header (usually labeled "PUMP_FAN" or "CPU_OPT"). This header runs the pump at full speed by default, which is what you want.

The radiator fans connect either directly to motherboard fan headers or to the AIO's own splitter cable if included. Either works. Set the fan curve in BIOS or via software so the fans respond to CPU temperature (not case ambient temperature) for the tightest cooling response under load.

If the AIO has USB connectivity for software control (Corsair iCUE, NZXT CAM, Lian Li L-Connect), route the USB cable to a motherboard internal USB 2.0 header. This is optional for cooling function but required for software features like customizable pump LCDs and per-fan RGB control.

Post-Install Verification

Boot the PC and immediately enter BIOS. Verify the CPU temperature reads in a reasonable range (30-45°C at idle) and the pump RPM shows in the fan monitoring. If the CPU temperature climbs rapidly (jumping 5°C every few seconds at idle), power off and check the CPU block mount — the paste is not making contact properly.

After Windows boot, run a short stress test (Cinebench single-run or 5 minutes of Prime95 small FFTs) while monitoring temperatures with HWiNFO64. A properly installed 240mm AIO on a mid-tier CPU should hold under 80°C under this load. Higher temperatures indicate a mounting problem, an airflow problem, or the AIO being undersized for the CPU.

Route the AIO tubes and cables before finalizing any mount. Tubes should follow gradual curves away from case fans, GPU airflow paths, and the CPU cooler tower (if you have one for reference). Cables — pump PWM, radiator fan power, USB (if the AIO has software) — should hit the same rear-panel cable management channel as other case cables rather than crossing the case interior.

Some AIOs have short cables that struggle to reach the motherboard's fan and USB headers from certain radiator positions. Verify cable lengths against your case's layout during dry-fit. A USB header extension cable or fan cable extension is cheap insurance if the stock cables are marginal.

Ongoing AIO Maintenance

AIOs need less maintenance than air coolers because there is no dust-catching heatsink at the CPU. The radiator does collect dust on the fan intake side and benefits from compressed-air cleaning every 6-12 months. Pull the fans off the radiator briefly for cleaning access if the radiator is deeply dusted — 30 seconds of tool-free access recovers real thermal performance.

Do not tamper with the sealed loop. Do not attempt to top up coolant. Do not open the pump. The loop is factory-sealed, and any attempt to service it typically damages the pump seals and voids the warranty. When the AIO reaches end-of-life (pump noise, elevated temperatures that cleaning does not resolve), replace the whole unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my AIO pump is running?

Feel the pump housing on the CPU block — it should have a subtle vibration when running. BIOS and monitoring software show pump RPM (typically 2000-3500 RPM at full speed). If the pump reads 0 RPM, the pump cable is not connected to a header that provides power, or the pump has failed.

Do I need to bleed air out of a new AIO?

Modern AIOs come pre-filled and pre-bled — no bleeding required for installation. If you hear gurgling or bubbling from the pump after installation, tilt the case gently to move air bubbles away from the pump; they should migrate to the top of the radiator within a few minutes of running.

Can I mount the radiator upside down?

Only if the pump is below the top of the radiator in that orientation. Upside-down top-mount (tubes-up) puts the pump at the highest point and will fail. Upside-down front-mount can work if the case layout keeps the pump below the radiator top — verify before finalizing.
